Say Anything (1989): The Courage to Speak Truly
An uplifting scene about choosing honesty over empty words
When asked what his plans for the future are, Lloyd chooses to speak from the heart instead of telling Diane’s father and friends what they expect to hear. This decision to choose honesty over empty words in order to impress lets Diane see Lloyd for who he truly is. He is rewarded with her trust and an unforgettable summer romance.
ACCOUNTANT
So Lloyd, you graduated Lakewood, right? What are you gonna do now?
JIM
Yeah Lloyd. What are your plans for the future?
LLOYD
Spend as much time as possible with Diane before she leaves.
JIM
Seriously, Lloyd.
LLOYD
I'm totally and completely serious.
Speaking from the heart can feel awkward (note Lloyd’s stammering at the beginning of the scene). It can also upset people. But it attracts the people and things we really want in life. Sometimes we will not be so strong and choose to pander and impress. But we can always catch ourselves and return to speaking truly, like Lloyd does when he almost says “I’m just like that with my sister” but instead says “I’m not even like that with anybody.”
I watched this movie for the first time last night and enjoyed it. Lloyd’s character reminded me to stay true and open myself up to those I care for. The short letter in the movie was also nice. I recently wrote someone I care for a letter. Maybe you will too?
Diane, I’ll always be there. All the love in my heart. Lloyd.
