The Shawshank Redemption (1994): Hope Is a Good Thing
"Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies."
The Shawshank Redemption (1994) is about an innocent prisoner keeping hope and showing his inmate friend that hope is a good thing. It’s an uplifting movie for anyone who feels trapped and cannot immediately escape, anyone who wants to make the best of an unfortunate situation, and anyone who has lost sight of what matters.
One of my favorite scenes in the movie (1:11:03) is when Andy (Tim Robbins) tells his prisoner friend Red (Morgan Freeman) that there’s something inside all the prisoners that the guards and warden cannot touch: hope. At the time, this upsets Red who says hope is a dangerous thing, that it can drive someone insane. However, we see that the hope Andy embodies throughout the movie — despite countless rapes, months of solitary confinement, and nearly two decades of wrongful imprisonment — makes Red believe that redemption is possible, even for himself.
The once-hopeless Red is now full of hope by the end of the movie. We see this after he reads Andy’s letter buried under the oak tree, my favorite scene (2:15:18). Like Andy, Red has achieved his redemption.
“Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies." - Andy Dufresne
The Shawshank Redemption (1994) teaches us that we can either accept a bleak future like Red or hope for something better like Andy. It also teaches us that, even though we cannot change our immediate circumstances, we can take small steps like Andy to set ourselves free. This is similar to how Morgan Freeman’s other character in the movie A Good Person (2023) accepts himself as an alcoholic but takes the small step of abstinence every day to free himself from addiction.
I love this movie because it spans the course of nearly two decades. This stretch of time makes us feel how strong Andy’s belief in hope truly is. Even after emerging from two months of solitary confinement, his hope does not waver. To such an extent where Red thinks he has completely lost it. But the more Andy is subjected to torment, the more he believes. That’s the power of hope.
Fun Fact: You can visit the prison where scenes from the movie were filmed in Mansfield, Ohio. You can also walk the streets of this small, quiet, blue collar town to see where other scenes were shot. I visited the area in 2022 and highly recommend it. The mess hall scene where Andy mentions hope for the first time to a doubting Red is actually filmed in one of the prison foyers. This is the same foyer where the scene in Air Force One (1997) was shot where the Russian commander is being released from jail.
